Nicole Sumich

Nicole began her tertiary flute studies under Alexa Still at the Victoria University of Wellington, where she received her Bachelors of Music with First Class Honours. She continued to further her flute studies under the tutelage of Professor Uwe Grodd at the University of Auckland, obtaining a Masters in Flute Performance, also with First Class Honours. She has received numerous awards, including first place at the New Zealand Flute Society Young Artist Competition, and has performed at events such as the National Flute Association convention in Orlando, Florida.
Before moving to Brunei to teach flute, clarinet, saxophone and piano at JIS in 2001, Nicole performed regularly with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, the St Matthew's Chamber Orchestra and the Chagall Trio. She also taught Secondary Music in New Zealand for several years; this included the Diocsean School for Girls - a prestigious private school in Auckland - where she was responsible for directing the Concert Band. She has also previously taught flute at Kristin School and St Cuthbert’s College.
Nicole has been teaching secondary music full time at JIS since 2011, specializing in the Middle Years and Music Futures programme. Over her time at JIS, she has accompanied JIS students on many tours to music festivals in Malaysia, Singapore, China, Hong Kong and Thailand.
